It was a bunch of college friends - some of whom were musical theatre majors, most of whom were not - coming together to turn their jokes & skills & chemistry into a…..parody. For the amusement of their friends & fellow college students. For fun. It was never expected or intended to make money, or ignite a phenomenon, or propel its team (of which Darren is a founding but not imperative member) into internet stardom and beyond. The fact that it did so regardless is an immense credit to the undeniable creativity, charisma, and talent of all involved. Professional theatre WISHES it could pack as much humor and heart into most of its current and recent offerings as StarKid manages in a single amateur college musical, or inspire even a fraction of the kind of grassroots word-of-mouth devotion that StarKid has consistently inspired. So if you agree with this confession, tbqh, you need to sort out your theatrical priorities and stop being a pretentious ass.
